Monteverdi made good on a perfect trip provided by driver Nick Steward to prevail in the $6,600 Preferred 3 Handicap Trot on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Hiawatha Horse Park.
He pushed off the wings for Steward, claiming the lead as they swung into the first turn until The Great Reset (Lorne House) ranged forward to his outside to grab control at the quarter in :27.2. Monteverdi was content with the pocket through fractions of :57.1 and 1:27.1 as the uncovered bid of For All You Know (Dennis Duford) failed to menace, and Steward summoned his gelding for a charge as they swung for home. In a two-horse race to the line, Monteverdi showed the best late trot and forged clear by 1-1/2 lengths to take a 1:57.2 victory. For All You Know stayed on for show.
Monteverdi improved to three-for-10 this season as he snagged his third win in his last four outings. The 12-year-old son of Cantab Hall-Cameo Credit reached the 40-win plateau and increased his career earnings to $377,135 in 302 starts. Greg Price trains the gelding for Karry Howard of Wardsville, Ont. The win payout was $7.
Two-year-old trotters contested Leg 3A of their Prospect Series in three $10,000 divisions — two for fillies and a single clash for colts.
Happy Baby ($2.50) was the fastest of the trio with a 2:01.4 score by 2-1/4 lengths in the first filly trot with Larry Small driving her to the maiden tally for trainer Carl Jamieson. Kinder Trouble ($5) built off last week’s Coupe de l’Avenir win with a 2:03 mile this time as trainer Guy Gagnon guided the filly to victory by three-quarters of a length.
Wolfpack Doc ($2.90) doubled up in the series as trainer-driver Tyler Moore piloted the colt to a 2:02.4 win by 3-1/4 lengths in the division for males.
