Warrawee Jade won the first leg of the Erwin Andrew Memorial Mares Trot Thursday night at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park. The time of the mile was 2:02.1.
The victory was certainly a special touch for the Andrew family when Brian Andrew drove Warrawee Jade to the victory in a race named in honour of his father. Brian’s son, Blake, co-owns the seven-year-old daughter of Angus Hall who had to maneuver from Post 8 and hold off challenges from Anita Blossom (Brodie MacPhee) and Napanee Seelster, who is also co-owned by another family member, Bill Andrew of Calgary, Alberta. Danny MacDonald did the driving in the third-place finish.
Zanzibar, with Marc Campbell in the bike, came flying late to grab the evening’s feature in a strong 1:58.1 clip. Teddys Place was second while Ultimate Success completed the Triactor.
Kenny Arsenault had a big night at the office when he recorded three winners on the program. Mark Bradley and Marc Campbell had driving doubles.
Racing returns Saturday in Charlottetown. Post time is 7 p.m.
