The pari-mutuelly popular Jepson Hanover proved to be too much for his foes to handle in Thursday evening’s $2,000 Joe & Wal Hennessey Memorial at Red Shores Charlottetown

Marc Campbell mapped out the winning trip for Jepson Hanover, who used an explosive brush in the late stages of the mile to post the 1:55.4 decision.
Real Bond fired to the front and hammered out early fractions of :28.1, :57.1 and 1:26.1 before being overtaken in the final strides by Jepson Hanover. Real Bond wound up three-quarters of a length back in second, while All Out rounded out the top three in the featured event.
Danny Romo trains the three-year-old son of Art Major-July Hot Mindale for owner Paul Gray of Pugwash, NS. The gelding is scheduled to return to the half-miler this Saturday to compete in the $2,500 The Papermaker Pace.
Earlier on the card, Saulsbrook Balance won a nailbiter in the $1,500 Open Trot for driver Willie Murphy. The six-year-old son of Nikes Image led the field through fractions of :29.2, 1:00.4 and 1:31 before using a :29.3 closing panel to win by a neck over Caliban Hanover. Third prize was earned by Zip The Lip.
Trainer Cynthia MacDonald of Montague shares ownership on the gelding with Tanya MacKinnon of Souris, PEI. The win improved the trotter’s 2011 record to 5-2-1 in 10 starts and his share of the purse bumped his lifetime earnings to $74,671.
