Preferreds Highlight Grand River Card

A trio of $8,500 Preferred classes – two for pacers and one for trotters – went postward Monday evening at Grand River Raceway, and there was no shortage of speed in the featured affairs.

Brodys Scrapper ripped off a 1:52.2 victory in his assignment for the tandem of driver Travis Cullen and trainer Rachel Andrew.

The nine-year-old son of Mach Three-Witness To Fame shot to the top from Post 3 and successfully chopped out fractions of :27.2, :56.2 and 1:23.3 before using a :28.4 closing quarter to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Paparazzi Hanover. American Risk was third.

Cullen and Andrew share ownership on the gelding who won for the third time this season and for the 31st time in his career. He recently surpassed $250,000 in lifetime earnings.

G A Speed Sammy motored to the top and kept on trucking en route to posting a 1:54.1 triumph in the second division of the pacing class for driver J.R. Plante and trainer Colin Johnson.

The five-year-old son of Shanghai Phil-Surprise De Mars parked past the opening quarter in :27 before finding his way to the pylons. He proceeded to whack out middle splits of :56 and 1:25 before scooting home in :29.1 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Mossies Art. Jack Of Clubs rallied from out the clouds to finish third.

Debbie Element of Rockwood, Ont. shares ownership on the pacer with Stephane Brosseau of L’Assomption, QC. It was the first win of the year – and the 18th to date – for the career winner of $85,751.

Cheatalotpov came out on top in the trotting feature for the duo of driver Tyler Moore and trainer Rob MacKenzie. The five-year-old son of Muscle Mass-Charming Oaks watched Willyorwonthe set fractions of :28.2, :58.1 and 1:27.4 before making a first-over bid against the favourite. Cheatalotpov stepped home in :30.2 to win by three-quarters of a length over Kris Me Goodnight in 1:58.1. Morally Flexible was third.

Nicholas Malcolm of Milton, Ont. bred and owns the gelding who improved this year’s record to 3-2-3 from 17 starts with the win. The five-time winner is closing in on $80,000 in lifetime earnings.
