Positioned behind a moderately-quick pace, Silverado popped from the pegs to overtake the tiring leader and win the $8,600 Preferred Pace at 10-1 on Sunday, Aug. 18 at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Saulsbrook Peach protected position at the pylons to lead Bestofbest Hanover past a :27.1 first quarter. Canadian Edition, leaving from post 3, sat wide of the leader for the remainder of the mile and lost ground while chasing a :55.4 half and 1:24.1 three-quarters. Room opened as Canadian Edition dropped out of contention, allowing driver Rodney La Framboise to launch Silverado towards the leader heading for the top of the stretch. He then withstood a late bid from Rub Of The Green N to win by a half length in 1:52.3 with pocket-sitter Bestofbest Hanover snagging third.
Returning $23.40 to win, Silverado won his second race from 26 starts this season and his 12th from 113 overall, earning $118,273. Wayne Laviolette owns and trains the eight-year-old Mach Three gelding.
Wildwild Men popped pocket in the $8,600 Preferred Trot to win in 1:56.1.
Lmc Mass Gem led the field through fractions of :28, :58.4 and 1:27.2. Neon Lights angled first over heading to the half—tracked by Flying Isa N—while Wildwild Men sat three lengths off the leader from second entering the final turn. The three slowly reeled in the pacesetter, with Wildwild Men slipping through the inside to take the lead through the stretch. Neon Lights hit the finish second, three-quarter lengths off the winner, with odds-on favourite Flying Isa N third.
A six-year-old gelding by Muscle Mass, Wildwild Men won his fifth race from 19 starts this season and his 22nd from 78 overall, earning $228,672. Guy Gagnon trains and drives the $8.00 winner for owners Catheline Pelletier and Chantal Gravel, who also bred the winner.
