Machs Beach Boy rallied home from off the pace to earn his second victory in the Slots Cup Series on Friday night as Flamboro Downs hosted the sixth and final preliminary round.
With the inside post advantage, Kendal Fresco (Lorne House) established the lead in the lone $15,000 division and carved out fractions of :28, :57 and 1:26.1 with favourite Machal Jordan (J.R. Plante) parked out and pressing and Machs Beach Boy moving into the second over spot. As the field approached the third quarter mark, driver Anthony Haughan sent Machs Beach Boy three-wide and gained the upper hand around the final turn before drawing clear down the lane to win in 1:55.4 by one length. Jetta Rama (Travis Henry) came on for second while Kendal Fresco edged out Machal Jordan and Shakethatash (Alfie Carroll) for third.
Machs Beach Boy paid $8.50 to win as the 3-1 second choice. Brad Shakes trains sophomore son of Mach Three for owners Dan Mogridge of Hillsdale, Ont. and Jeffery Oborne of Jordan Station, Ont.
The bay gelding has won two of his 13 seasonal starts. He was victorious in his first Slots Cup Series start in the second leg on June 17 at Clinton Raceway and followed that up with a fourth place effort in the third leg on June 26 at Georgian Downs and a close second in the fifth leg on August 10 at Grand River Raceway.
The Slots Cup Series, sponsored by Racetracks of Ontario Marketing & Promotions (ROMP), is for three and four-year-old Ontario sired pacers that are non-winners of $50,000 life as of January 15, 2012. The top money-earners in the series will head to Hiawatha Horse Park on September 8 for the $100,000 final.
