Kathy “High-Flying” Hawk became the only third woman to win a Billings Amateur trot this year when she reined Quikmaster to a 2:05 victory in a Midwestern Region event at the Muskingum County Fair in Zanesville, Ohio on Monday afternoon, August 17
.
She now joins Terry “the Dairy Queen” Donnelly and Patricia “the Write Stuff” Miller and Michelle “the Belle” Ruvola as winning drivers of a Billings trot thus far in 2009.
A professional trainer by trade, Hawk occasionally likes to jump up behind her stock and compete in the amateur ranks, which she does in her home area only a few times each year.
With the luck of the draw giving her and her trotter the pole position Hawk took advantage of being inside five others and she set sails for the front-end and once on top she and Quikmaster made every pole a winning one for a one length victory over Stonebridge Romeo, who was driven by Northfield Park’s Director of Racing, Gregg “Fast Greggy” Keidel.
When Kelly “Sky” Walker's trotter, Abs Super Hall, went off-stride at the start and spotted the field some 10 lengths his chances for six consecutive Billings driving victories fell by the wayside, but he did, however, rally back to finish third beaten only 1-1/4 lengths at the wire.
Next Midwest Region Billings action will take place on Saturday, August 22 at the Lake County Fair in Painesville, Ohio.
