Facing a red-hot Forty Gs, veteran Dewey Arnold made every call a winning one and hung on to capture the $11,644 Open Trot on Friday, Aug. 15 at Vernon Downs.
Driver Ron Harp darted Dewey Arnold to the lead and trotted on top through fractions of :27, :56.3 and 1:26.1 with favoured Forty Gs (Roman Lopez) the threat in the two hole. As they reached the stretch, Forty Gs slipped through on the inside and gave it all he had but Dewey Arnold dug in and won by half a length in 1:55.1. Forty Gs finished second, snapping his nine-race streak, with Kinnder Hotblood (Jimmy Whittemore) in the show spot.
Dewey Arnold is a seven-year-old gelding by Deweycheatumnhowe, owned by Phillip Hale and trainer David Dewhurst. The earner of $568,989 in his career now boasts 41 career victories, with six coming this season, and he returned $8.20 to win here as the 3-1 second choice.
