Pouncing on the leader into the final turn, Arrakis surged to score consecutive victories in the $13,000 Preferred 2 Trot at Georgian Downs when taking the feature on Sunday (Aug. 15).
Refi, the 6-5 favourite, grabbed control past a :27.3 first quarter to pocket Esquire passing the stands first time. Driver Bob McClure floated Arrakis into third and remained in that spot past a :57.3 half. McClure called upon the nine-year-old Federal Flex gelding into the backstretch and pressed tempo-setter Refi passing three-quarters in 1:26.4. Drawing to closer terms at the bottom of the turn, Arrakis eventually downed the stubborn leader to win by three-quarter lengths in 1:56 with Esquire finishing third.
Owned and trained by Francis Guillemette, Arrakis won his seventh race from 14 starts this season and his 24th from 187 overall, earning $396,404. He paid $10.30 to win.
