Lucy Who posted the fastest victory of the three Ontario Sires Stakes (OSS) Grassroots divisions for two-year-old trotting fillies on Saturday night (Aug. 13) at Kawartha Downs.
Driver Jean Bernard Renaud sent Lucy Who for the front and cleared control after a :30 first quarter. With no challenge to a :59.4 half, the daughter of Wheeling N Dealin braced for the first-over attack from longshot No Angel Like Me up the backside and kept that challenger parked to three-quarters in 1:30.1. Saving ground around the turn, Lucy Who edged back to the lead and kept No Angel Like Me at bay by a half length in 2:00.4 with 2-1 favourite Stonebridge Icing third and Dealin Fashion fourth.
Julie Walker trains Lucy Who for owner-breeder Murray Bradshaw. She won her second race from four starts and has now earned $27,100. She paid $6.60 to win.
Trainer-driver Mark Etsell cleared command with Sweet Carrie T midway through the first division and blew clear of their competition to win in 2:02.1. Etsell settled the daughter of Muscle Mass in second behind Mass Envy through a :31 first quarter before angling off the pegs for the front. Past a 1:02 half, Sweet Carrie T took over the lead and slowly opened her lead to three-quarters in 1:31.3 before turning for home and crossing the line 6-3/4 lengths better than Divinne Magic, who recovered from a break at the start to take second. Mass Envy faded to third and Sister Twister took fourth.
Sweet Carrie T competes for owners Etsell Newton, Graham Hopkins, Peter Porter and Lindsey Turner. She won her first race from five starts and has now banked $24,754. She paid $9.60 to win.
Enola persisted through a parked mile in the final Grassroots split to win narrowly in 2:04. Driver Tyler Borth sent the daughter of Resolve for the front but failed to clear from leader Cunning Connie to a :30.1 first quarter. Borth opted to stay alongside and marched closer to the tempo-setter through a 1:02.1 half and through three-quarters in 1:35. The pair raced neck and neck for home with Enola's neck getting the better of Cunning Connie by the beam with the two holding off a late charge from Sant Ambroggio. Salla rode the pocket for fourth.
Douglas McCarthy owns Enola, who won her second race from four starts and has now earned $21,370. Keith Jones trains the filly who paid $8.40 to win.
