The "Ken-Federation" Cup?

Published: August 14, 2011 09:29 am EDT

Two of the most popular announcers and on-screen personalities in harness racing team up for the first time today at their old stomping grounds as Flamboro Downs features the 35th edition of the Confederation Cup

.

Ken Middleton and Ken Warkentin, now the voices for Mohawk/Woodbine and the Meadowlands, will host Flamboro's broadcast of the Confederation Cup, starting with a first race post time of 1:00 p.m.

Warkentin was the voice of Flamboro from 1982-1991 and called Confederation Cup victories for such superstars as Cam Fella, On The Road Again, Jate Lobell and Matts Scooter.

"I've never worked with Ken before but I'm looking forward to it and being back at Flamboro," said Warkentin.

Middleton, who followed as the track announcer and PR assistant at Flamboro from 1994-1998, still enjoys Flamboro's signature day and the memories of past Cup glory.

"I still get a charge out of driving down the laneway and looking at the names of the past winners listed on each of the lightpoles as you drive towards the grandstand from the highway," said Middleton. "I met a lot of people and made some great friends when I worked at Flamboro, and I love going back every year to be a part of their biggest day of the season.

"It will be cool to reminisce [with Warkentin] about the days we worked there, and I'm anticipating he'll have some good Charlie Juravinski stories to share."

The Kens each shared a Kenfederation Confederation Cup Day selection.

First Elimination

Middleton - Foreclosure N - "I like Foreclosure N in the first elimination. He's been a bit snake-bitten in some of the big races as far as post positions are concerned, but he always lets them know he's around."

Warkentin - Up The Credit – "North America Cup winner in 1:49.3, set a stakes record of 1:49 in the Somebeachsomewhere, poor position blamed for not making the Meadowlands Pace, bounced back with a sterling rally in the consolation, missed three weeks prior to his second at Mohawk last Saturday, Carl Jamieson returns to his former home track."

Second Elimination

Middleton - Keystone Velocity - "I'm leaning towards Keystone Velocity. He went a wicked mile at Pocono Downs in his most recent outing and about a month ago he did all the work and was only beaten a length by Big Bad John in a leg of the PASS. He could fool a lot of people."

Warkentin - Rollwithitharry – "Adios elimination winner in 1:50.2 has always been a top level colt, won a Bluegrass division as a freshman in 1:51.3, third to outstanding stablemate See You At Peelers in this year’s Art Rooney, 2010 Trainer of the Year Jimmy Takter teams with 2005 winner Mark MacDonald."
