Racemup, 'Justpace' Take Manitoba Stakes

Racemup and Dontchase Justpace bested the odds-on favourites in the $3,699 Golden Boy Stake and $4,724 Silk Lace Stake respectively on the 10-race matinee at Killarney on Sunday, Aug. 12.

Away third, Racemup sat off of Good Eye Hawkeye posting a :29.2 opening quarter on the lead in the Golden Boy Stake and stayed put at the rail through a 1:00.2 half. Driver Tyler Grundy tipped the Arthur Rey trainee first over into the backstretch and ranged to within a neck of the lead by three-quarters in 1:32 before powering to the lead into the stretch and winning by three lengths over Good Eye Hawkeye. Reys N A Ruckus, ahead of early breaker Givitathottakashot, finished third in the field of four 22 lengths behind.

Owned by Arthur Rey, Racemup, a three-year-old colt by Whatayasay from the Shark Gesture mare Logicallyinclined, won his third race in five starts, earning $6,061. He paid $3.80 to win.

Dontchase Justpace won going wire to wire in the Silk Lace Stake for owner-trainer-driver Dean Rey. The filly by Charms Shark took control from post seven and led the field by the quarter in :30.2 and the half in 1:01.1 while under no pressure. Release The Baby, the 1-2 favourite and positioned fifth at the quarter, edged first over moving to three-quarters to be a length from the lead in 1:32.3. Dontchase Justpace then widened her lead moving to the stretch, winning by four lengths in 2:03.3 over Release The Baby with Reys N An Orchid 24 lengths back in third.

Winning her second race in four starts this season and her third in eight overall, Dontchase Justpace, from the Art Major mare Major Story, has earned $10,977 to date and returned $5.20 to win.

Trainer Trevor Williams won three of the 10 races on the Killarney program. His wins included Flamingbluestar ($6.00), who popped pocket to win a $2,700 claiming pace in 2:04.1, Als Frenchy Brown ($2.30), a wire to wire winner in 2:07.2 in a $2,700 maiden pace, and in the $3,600 Open Pace with Blue Eyed Cowboy ($2.50), who paced fractions of :30, :59.3 and 1:30.1 in progress to a 13-length victory in 1:59.1 over pocket-sitter False Advertising and first-over challenger Baylor Out.

Driver Don Howlett piloted five winners on the card including in the $3,300 Preferred Pace, winning with Honey Booboolina in 2:02.

The 9-5 co-favourite sat fifth while Red Star Tiger paced to the quarter in :29.3 on the front. Full Moon Dodger, the other 9-5 favourite and positioned third at the quarter, angled off the rail heading to the half, carrying Honey Boobolina into contention through a :59.3 clip.

Honey Booboolina was left uncovered to pursue Full Moon Dodger heading to three-quarters while Cordees Fantasy edged out of the pocket to pick up cover second over. Through three-quarters in 1:31, Honey Booboolina took command into the stretch and extended to a two-length margin over Cordees Fantasy in second while Full Moon Dodger faded another two lengths and settled for third.

A six-year-old mare by As Promised out of the Matts Scooter mare Bouboulina, Honey Booboolina, owned by Wanda Howlett and Cynthia Hoey, won her fourth race in 21 starts this season and her 14th in 114 overall, earning $120,648. Don Howlett also conditions the $5.60 winner.

Howlett's four other winners came with Als Frenchy Brown, Cor Dees Rocket ($9.20), a 13-length winner in 2:01.3 in a $3,200 conditioned pace, Witch Doctor ($4.90), pulling pocket to win a $3,200 claiming pace in 2:04.4, and aboard Blue Eyed Cowboy.
