Grassroots Fillies Invade Sudbury

Twin B Alibi kicked off Sunday afternoon’s Grassroots event with a hard fought victory over the Sudbury Downs half-mile.

With trainer Wayne Henry in the race bike, Twin B Alibi fired out of Post 3 to a :29 opening quarter and then led the field to a :59.1 half. Heading for the 1:29.2 three-quarters longshot Standing My Ground started to pressure the pacesetter, but Twin B Alibi stayed game, battling all the way to the wire for a three-quarter length victory in 2:00.3. Standing My Ground settled for second, one length ahead of favourite Twiggys Twick.

Arthur resident Henry shares ownership of Twin B Alibi with Daylon Farms of Komoka and the Estate of Daniel J. McCann of Parkhill. With two wins and one second in the first three Grassroots events, the Angus Hall daughter shares ownership of top spot in the division standings with the filly that won the second $18,000 Grassroots event on Sunday.

Like her rival, Muscle Magic went straight to the front from Post 2 and rolled to a commanding four length victory in 1:59.4. Favourite Orderingin hit the wire second while Bop Too The Top rounded out the top three.

Baillargeon pilots the filly for his brother, trainer Ben Baillargeon of Rockwood, Nunzio Vena of Bolton and Santo Vena of Brampton. Like Twin B Alibi, the Muscle Mass daughter has two wins and one second to her credit for a total of 125 Grassroots points.

Mario Baillargeon picked up a second Grassroots victory in the third division, guiding Legzy to a 2:01.3 victory over Katla and Georgia Baby. The win was the first this season for Amigo Hall daughter Legzy, who was a Gold Final winner last season for trainer Rob Fellows and owner-breeders Edward Wilson of Seagrave and Michael Pozefsky of Saratoga Springs, NY.

The final Grassroots division went to Armstead Kyra and driver David Boughton, who stopped the clock at 2:02.3 for trainer Mike Keeling and owner-breeder Dr. Roland Armitage of Dunrobin.

The talented three-year-old trotting fillies make their fourth of six Grassroots stops at Mohawk Racetrack on Aug. 19.
