Horseman Callie Rankin will be on the sidelines for a spell after suffering two broken ribs in an accident
at Flamboro Downs on Friday night.
In Race 11, Rankin was about to make a three-wide bid with Overs Last Promise when a breaking horse in front of him crossed into his path.
"He couldn't avoid it. Their bikes got tangled up," Rankin's daughter Jen told Trot Insider. "[Callie] got tossed off the bike and our horse went down, and the five horse got loose."
"He landed on his right shoulder and side. He wasn't feeling too bad after -- just a bit sore and winded, but Saturday night was in extreme pain. We went to McMaster Hospital on Sunday and he has two fractured ribs as well as lots of scrapes and bruising."
The other participants in the spill reportedly suffered no major injuries.
Rankin, a Maritime native who resides in Dundas, Ont. and boasts over 3,600 driving wins and over 2,000 training victories, will take some time off to heal.
