A talented 10-horse field was assembled for this week’s edition of the $50,000 Open Trot at Mohawk Racetrack, and Gutsy Volo proved to be too much
for the competition to handle in the Monday evening tilt.
The relatively new recruit to the stable of trainer Matt Dupuis entered the assignment fresh off a 1:52.4 career-best clocking in the July 25 edition of the $40,000 Preferred at Mohawk Racetrack, and he found the line just in time to push the win streak to two-in-a-row for partners Brian Cassell, Jacqueline Dinelle and Sean Hibbert.
Keith Oliver got away third with Gutsy Volo while Rose Run Hooligan marched to the engine and laid down a :28.2 front panel. Oliver punched the throttle as the field entered the backstretch, and Gutsy Volo was allowed to clear without a tussle.
Once in command, the five-year-old son of Yankee Glide-Gutsy Lobell whacked out middle splits of :57.2 and 1:26 before jetting home in :27.4 to seal the deal by a neck. Armbro Continental was second to the 1:53.4 winner, and Rose Run Hooligan grabbed the show dough.
It was the fourth win of the season for Gutsy Volo, who put together a 17-for-29 record in 2008. The gelding has banked in excess of $233,000 to date.
