The beat goes on for Judges Discretion and driver Tyler Redwood at the Yorkton Exhibition. Tuesday night the tandem overcame a six-hole position, a spot that had them last going into the first corner at Cornerstone Raceway, to eventually nose out Brian Gray and Stagger Lee for Judges Discretion's 11th straight win. Clayton Braybrook with Als Dream Gal was third.
Redwood said the race did not go as planned, but Judges Discretion still got it done, adding he was surprised to hear the win was by a nose.
"I thought it was a lot more than that. I thought it was a head, or more," he said.
That said Redwood knew he was being challenged down the stretch.
"They (Judges Discretion and Stagger Lee) looked each other in the eye," he said, "It was a battle down the stretch. We had to work hard against Stagger."
The 11th straight win came in the third race of the rain-out make-up card, and from that point it was all Redwood on the six race night.
In race four he took Light The Board to the win, the five-year-old gelding's fifth win in seven starts.
Ignite The Spark went to the winner's circle in race five with Redwood aboard. It was the third straight win for the seven year old gelding.
Redwood said he and Ignite The Spark have history.
"I had the horse. He (Joe Soloninko) claimed him off me," he said. "We were like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. We get along."
Then in the final race of the night Redwood took Red Star Best to top spot, the fourth win in five starts for the nine-year-old gelding.
Red Star Best had pulled off three straight wins, then lost a pair, and was then handed to Redwood to train and drive. Asked what he did to get him back on track, Redwood said he kept things simple.
"We only had him for a few days," he said, adding he went to Manitoba to drive on the weekend so his nephew basically jogged him lightly.
"He's got a ton of weight he's got to lose," he said, but added that is a process, so he kept things simple and it worked.
