Frances F. Schloss was overcome by emotion after her three-year-old trotter Master In Charge won a division of the Governor’s Cup Trot as part of the Ohio State Fair stakes at Scioto Downs on Friday night

The longtime Cincinnati owner had endured her trotter’s 0-for-10 season and then watched him overcome the outside post and 15-1 odds to win.
In 1970, her pacing colt Frisky Hill won the Buckeye State Pace for two-year-olds at the Ohio State Fair. She is the daughter of the prominent owner Samuel Huttenbauer, who started many trotters in the Governor’s Cup but never came away a winner.
Master In Charge was the beneficiary of a torrid early tempo as the opening half was trotted in :56.1 seconds and driver Chip Noble had the gelded son of Master Lavec well back in sixth place. When the leaders tired, Master In Charge rallied in the stretch to win over Goldn Chip Chip and early leader Rose Run Kurt. The time was 1:57.3.

Driver Chip Noble got the night’s power-packed program off to a rousing start when he drove Lavish Liz to a 1:52 mile in a division of the Ohio’s First Lady Pace. It was the fastest mile of the season at Scioto.
The 1-2 favourite, owned by James Coffman and Martha Handschumaker, prevailed over Forever Ivy and Stablecreekcruiser.
The other division of the Ohio’s First Lady went to Best Of Ball after a pacesetting score in 1:55.1 for trainer/driver Jim Dailey. The daughter of Presidential Ball has won 11 of her 12 lifetime starts and scored over Jellyfish Joy and Sams Shuffle for the Down The Lane Stable.
The second division of the Governor’s Cup went to B Contemporary for trainer/driver Jim Dailey, who shadowed pacesetting Sun Of A Victory to the stretch, then trotted past him to win by two lengths in 1:56.3. Masters Cook was third. Kimberly Dailey and Paul Thiesing own the son of Pegasus Spur.
Chips And Wings scored in the third division of the Governor’s Cup for trainer Ron Burke and driver Matt Kakaley as the son of Chip Chip Hooray stepped to the front early in the race and raced bravely to the wire to win by 3-3/4 lengths over Look At That and V Squared. The 1-2 favourite was clocked in 1:58.1.
The Ohio State Trot for two-year-old was contested in four divisions and the opener went to Lima Apollo and driver Ryan Stahl, a nose winner in 1:59.1 over favoured Rose Run Legend. Jazz Spur was third. The winner is owned by Jeffery Cox and Richard McNutt.
The second Ohio State Trot split was taken by Three And Two, a well-named son of Full Count steered to victory by trainer Marty Wollam. He made a powerful move to the front with a quarter-mile remaining to win by 2-1/2 lengths in 2:00 over Wolf Creek Tad and Rose Run Lamar. The Polichena Racing Stable, Acadia Farms, and P.J. Wollam own the colt.
Jailhouse Scorpion and driver Russell Swartz set all the fractions in winning the third division of the Ohio State Trot in 1:59.3. They held on by a half-length to get the trophy over Sing Jesse Sing and Call The Warden, who made a break at the start. It was the first career win for the young trotter.
The final division for two-year-old male trotters was taken by Sharp Edge driven by trainer Chip Noble, his third win in an Ohio State Fair stake on Friday. The Robert Kauffman-owned colt moved to the front halfway through the race and eased to the wire 1-3/4 lengths ahead of his pursuers in 1:59.1. My D Sammy was second and Count Dracula got the third-place check.
