Trainer-driver Dave Kelly exerted his dominance over The Track On 2 once again, this time steering five winners – four from his own barn including a track record-equalling winner – on the eight-race card on Sunday (July 9).
Starting in Race 2, the victories came naturally to Dave Kelly as he began a training grand slam with a pocket-popping win by Snowpeak (1:55 winning mile; $5 to win) -- the Artspeak filly, who set a divisional rookie record at The Track On 2 in her only win last year, matched the track record for three-year-old pacing fillies on Sunday in her first victory of the season.
Kelly then returned to the winner's circle in the third dash with Panda Bear (1:56.2; $2.70), won the next race with Show Step (1:52.4; $3) and then notched his fourth tally of the card with Tropical Dragon (1:52.3; $3.40, pictured above) in the fifth.
HF Number Five appeared to be the right horse to give Kelly his fifth win, but the duo just missed by a head in the sixth race to Casanova and driver Mike Hennessy. Undaunted, Kelly then bagged his fifth driving win by guiding Gord Empey trainee Cenalta Hawk (1:53.4; $3.80) to victory in the penultimate race of the day.
Dave Kelly expanded his lead as he tries to defend his driving and training titles at The Track On 2. He now has eight driving wins through the 16 races so far this meet and seven training wins.
