Outlawguns N Roses Maintains Hot Hand In ABSS Marquis Eliminations

Outlawguns N Roses continued to roll, winning the faster of two Alberta Sires Stake Marquis Series eliminations for three-year-old filly pacers on Saturday, July 6 at Century Downs Racetrack and Casino.

Outlawguns N Roses closed late to win her $12,500 ABSS Marquis elimination in a blazing 1:53. Over Ice held forth through fractions of :27, :56 and 1:24. Second by a head at the top of the stretch, Outlawguns N Roses (David Kelly) made her move just before the wire to get up for the one-length victory. Byby Baby Byby (Michael Hennessy) also closed later for second, leaving Over Ice (Brandon Campbell) third. Caughtstealinghome (Jamies Gray) was fourth.

The Captive Audience filly has now won two in a row and five of six starts in 2024. Outlawguns N Roses shows a bankroll of $77,150 this year. Trained and co-owned by Rod Starkewski, Outlawguns N Roses is co-owned by Clauzette Byckal of Onoway, Alta.

In the first Marquis elimination, Oye Como Va (Nathan Sobey) got up in the stretch to charge down leader Lickslips Sinkships and win by 1-1/2 lengths in 1:57.3.

Foothills Magic was on top at the quarter in :29.1. After that, Licklips Swinghips (Kelly Hoerdt) took over, setting fractions of :59.1 and 1:28.2. Licklips Swinghips held on for second, with Born A Spy (Logan Gillis) finishing third over Foothills Magic.

A three-year-old Santanna Blue Chip filly, Oye Como Va is 3-3-1 in 10 starts this year, good for earnings of $22,466. Sobey trains and co-owns the filly with Robert Jones of Stony Plain, Alta. and Archie Benekos of Calgary.

A pair of $12,500 eliminations for three-year-old colt and geldng pacers in the Alberta Sires Stakes Maverick Series also highlighted the Century card.

In the first elim, YYC On The Horizon (Jamie Gray) made a late move to nip Grey Horizon (Campbell) by three-quarters of a length at the wire in 1:55. Nevada Dragon (Sobey) was third and Pull The Trigger (Chris Brown) was fourth. 

Gray also trains and co-owns YYC On the Horizon with Wild Dunes Stables of Delta, B.C. The Vertical Horizon gelding has two wins in eight starts and earnings of $15,019 this year.

Gray's Come On Santana went wire to wire to win the other elimination in 1:53.4. Rum N Custard (Hoerdt) was second, with Phone Nine One One (Gillis) in third and One Hot Minute (Campbell) fourth.

Gray also trains and co-owns the Santanna Blue Chip gelding with Max Gibb of Millarville, Alta, and Riley S & Brie L M Gray of Sturgeon County, Alta. Come On Santana is 2-0-1 in five starts this year, good for earnings of $21,380.

The top four finishers from each of the Marquis and Maverick elims advance to the $50,000 finals on Saturday, July 13.

Racing resumes at Century Downs on Friday, July 12 with a 2:15 p.m. post time.
