When the Callbeck Stakes hit the racetrack at Summerside Raceway Wednesday night, the voice of Prince Edward Island harness racing, Vance Cameron, will be there to greet the two-year-olds
as they make their freshman stakes debut.
Cameron, 49, who suffered a heart attack on June 28, told Atlantic Post Calls today he plans to call a number of the races, sharing duties with Rocky Schurman, who has filled in for him during his absence.
“I’m feeling great. I find it hard to believe I have suffered a heart attack,” said Cameron in a telephone interview from his home in Summerside.
Cameron spent a couple of days in the intensive care unit at Prince County General Hospital before travelling to Halifax for a surgery procedure to repair a damaged artery.
“The doctors told me I suffered a massive heart attack, but that two of my arteries were amazingly clean,” he said.
Cameron says he has been instructed to take it easy.
“I plan to get back to full strength gradually, but there’s a lot of big racing events coming up.” he said, giving the indication that he’s going to have to exercise a lot of personal discipline.
Summerside Raceway’s biggest week, Lobster Carnival Week, runs from July 12 to 18 and Old Home Week at Charlottetown Driving Park in only about a month away.
