No better than fourth in the preliminary legs, Southwind Distilld moved relentlessly first over to spring a 28-1, maiden-breaking shocker in Wednesday’s $14,000 championship of a Pop Up Series for two-year-old colt and gelding trotters at Hollywood Casino at The Meadows.
With Drive To Deliver and Austral Hanover — the pair that dominated the preliminary legs — sitting 1-2, it seemed only a matter of time before Southwind Distilld tired and dropped back. But Southwind Distilld and Ronnie Gillespie had other ideas. The son of Father Patrick-Dolce Delight passed Drive To Deliver in mid-stretch; by the time Austral Hanover found racing room, it was too late.
Southwind Distilld scored in 1:57, three-quarters of a length better than Austral Hanover, while Drive To Deliver saved show.

Wednesday’s Jackpot Pick 5, fueled by several weeks of carryovers, was taken down, with the single winning ticket worth $37,096.34.
Live racing at The Meadows continues Thursday, with first post at 12:45 p.m.
