Look Closer Lowers Grand River Record

The Paula Wellwood-trained Look Closer added his name to the Grand River Raceway record book on Monday

evening when he toured the Elora, Ontario oval in 1:58, thus lowering the track standard for three-year-old trotting geldings.

Look Closer (Scott Coulter) knocked three-fifths of a second off the former record of 1:58.3 set by Chosen Voyageur on September 1, 2006.

The son of Muscles Yankee-My Own Hanover got away eighth in the $9,500 conditioned tilt, but he picked up one position while advancing on the rim on the way to the half-mile marker. A three-wide move at the three-quarter pole saw him move into fifth, and he used a :29.2 final frame to post the quarter-length decision over Hall Of Wishes (Mike Langdon). Tempo-setter Meadowview Sunny, who supplied splits of :28.4, :58.1 and 1:28, was third.

Wellwood Stables Inc of Cambridge, Ontario owns the youngster, who was sixth in his previous outing versus Grand Circuit foes in the $387,000 final of the Goodtimes Trot at Mohawk Racetrack on June 26. The win was the gelding’s third of the season in nine trips postward, and the lion’s share of the purse lifted his lifetime earnings to $65,960.
