Even though driver Austin Sorrie and Sicario barely saw a pylon, the Richard Moreau trainee nonetheless forged his way to a narrow victory in the $12,000 Preferred 2 Trot at Georgian Downs on Sunday (July 4).
Sorrie sent Sicario for the front from post 7 but failed to cross over as 3-2 favourite Jumpshot protected the lead to a :27.2 first quarter. He kept Sicario parked to a :57.1 half before he began to tire into the backstretch. Sicario slid to the top past three-quarters in 1:25 and opened a lead of three lengths off the final turn until he started to grow leg weary. With the separation he built into the stretch, the 6-year-old Holiday Road gelding had just enough ground covered to hold off a late charge from Esquire by a head in a 1:55.1 mile. Fly Beyond rallied from last for third.
Owned by Pamela and John Hehn, Sicario won his second race from eight starts this season and his 24th from 102 overall, earning $229,508. He paid $12.20 to win.
