It was another good morning for pacing sire Sportswriter, who produced a pair of two-year-old qualifying winners during Friday’s nine-race session at Mohawk Racetrack.

Pop Writer, a Sportswriter-Pop Or Tonic filly, stepped home in :27.4 and produced a 1:57.1 victory for the tandem of driver Doug McNair and trainer Tony Alagna. The freshman, who is owned by Alagna Racing LLC and John Carver, is the fourth foal out of a sister to the millionairesses Economy Terror (1:49 – $1,637,239) and Yellow Diamond ($1,387,013).

Alagna and McNair later clicked with the Sportswriter filly, Lady Hill, in 1:57.4. The young lass carved out panels of :31, 1:00.3 and 1:30.2 before roaring home in :27.2 to produce the win for owner Tom Hill of Lancashire, England. The $23,000 purchase from last year’s Canadian Yearling Sale is the first foal from the mare St Lads Hailaroo (1:52.2 - $220,589).

Trainer Jack Darling watched Shadow Play-Fit N Fancy filly Amazing Control wire up her foes for driver Jody Jamieson en route to a 1:57.4 score in her qualifier. The pacing lass tore through fractions of :29.4, 1:00.1 and 1:29.2 before sprinting home in :28.2 for the win. Hutt Racing Stable of Paoli, PA owns the sister to Winbak Warrior (1:51.2 - $153,215) and Fancy Camelot (1:55 - $151,769).

Happy Becky was the other rookie winner during the Friday morning qualifying session. Chris Christoforou guided the Casie Coleman-trained daughter of Cams Card Shark-Happy Doris to a 13-length victory in 1:58.3. The $30,000 purchase from last fall’s Lexington Select Yearling Sale is a sister to Royal Flush Shark (1:50 - $404,464) and Blackjack Princess (1:51.1 - $327,671). She is owned by West Wins Stable, Bob Darrow, Ron Broadstone and soon-to-be Hall of Famer, David Miller.
