It was a night for favourites at Hanover Raceway. The post time favourite won eight of the 12 races on Saturday night and finished second in each of the four other races
on the card.
The highlight was in Race 5 when 11-year-old C Ws Special won the 57th race of his brilliant career in 1:57 flat. The son of Albert Albert led from start to finish for owners Carol and Pat Dwyer of Elmwood and was steered masterfully by Bruce Richardson.
Race 11 saw last year’s Claimer of the Year win his fourth race of the season in six tries. Sauble Jackson took on horses three-wide off the gate, but was too strong for his competition and led wire to wire in 1:57.4, tying his season's-best time. Sauble Jackson is owned and trained by Sauble Hill Farms of Tara, and was driven by Bruce Richardson.
Special guests on the night were the Owen Sound branch of the Canadian Paraplegic Association, who held a 50-50 draw. Marilyn Hunt of Owen Sound, who was in attendance, won over $830.
Overall, it was the biggest handle of the season at Hanover, with over $25,700 dollars bet on the 12 live races.
The Trot National Handicapping Championship returns to Hanover Raceway on Wednesday night, as fans get to pick a horse in each of five races, accumulating points based on their horses performance.
The top five finishers at the end of July will win prizes, and the overall winner will represent Hanover at the National Finals, this November in Ottawa.
Competitors from all over Canada will take part, vying for a piece of the prize pool which includes $25,000 dollars for first place. Hanover Raceway also welcomes seniors from the Gateway Haven and Brucelea Haven Nursing homes, who will present blankets to the winning horse’s in Races 4 and 5. Post time Wednesday night is 7:15 p.m.
