Sugar Bowl is back in action at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park for the Thursday, Aug. 1 evening feature.

The capital oval will host 14 dashes starting at 6 p.m. with Sugar Bowl the morning line favourite in the race 13 featured conditioned pace for fillies and mares.

Jason Hughes will drive the Ashley Gamester trainee from post three for owners Brian MacPhee and Tommy Collings of Mount Stewart, P.E.I. in the $3,500 feature. The five-year-old daughter of Sweet Lou has garnered two wins, two seconds and two thirds from seven seasonal starts including a third-place finish in her latest in the $7,500 Ruby Chappell Memorial final at Red Shores Summerside.

Lady Devine will control the pylons at the start for the Red Shores Charlottetown leading duo of driver David Dowling and trainer Jennifer Doyle. Dowling continues to lead all drivers at the historic oval with 52 wins this season. Adam Merner sits in second place with 35 wins while Marc Campbell will look to close the gap to win his 15th straight Red Shores Charlottetown driving title as he sits third at 33 trips to the winner’s circle. In fourth amongst drivers is Gilles Barrieau (31 wins) followed by Corey MacPherson (27 wins) to round out the top five.

On the training side, Doyle is a 38-time winner this season with a 12-race lead over Jeff Holmes at 26 wins while Ron Matheson is third at 23 victories. Dowling is fourth at 22 wins with Melissa Rennie following in fifth in 17 wins.

Another top entry in the Thursday feature is post two starter Saulsbrook Abbey (Ken Murphy), who just won a Grassroots division of the P.E.I. Colt Stakes Graduate Series in her last start in 1:57.2 for trainer Saul Lanigan.

Also in the field are Pasta Momma (Campbell) from post four and Big Diamond (MacPherson) with post five.

The Post Time Picks like Sugar Bowl to win: “Sugar Bowl has been up against the best mares on the east coast and more than holding her own. Moves into post three and, with the 'Blue Knight' at the wheel, this could be the night she returns to her winning ways.”
