Amy and Curtis Clements' homebred gelding P C Mercury Rising persisted through a first-over push on the final turn to secure a narrow victory in the $7,100 Prospect Series division for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings on Sunday night (July 31) at Georgian Downs.
The son of Lookslikeachpndale raced third from the pylons as half the field broke stride toward a :29.2 first quarter. He stayed put while Allstar Megastar took the field to the half in 1:01.3 before faltering up the backside. Prestige Duharas, the 2-1 favourite, circled from the pocket to take the lead with P C Mercury Rising tracking that move and then pressing forward through three-quarters in 1:31.3. P C Mercury Rising continued to dig into Prestige Duharas straightening for home and overpowered the leader late to put a head in front at the end of a 2:02.1 mile. All Out Victor finished third, another five lengths behind, with Allstar Megastar fading to fourth.
P C Mercury Rising broke his maiden at third asking and pushed his earnings to $5,926. Trainer Curtis Clements sat in the sulky behind the gelding who paid $8.60 to win.
