All eyes were on John Campbell on Sunday (July 30) at Clinton Raceway, as ‘Mr. Harness Racing’ was in the sulky for his final career drive, which came in the 2017 Legends Day Trot. And now you can ride right along with him, courtesy of some unparalleled access.
The United States Trotting Association had cameras mounted on Campbell’s race bike as he steered the Amy MacDonald-trained Happy Holidays. Suffice it to say, it wasn’t meant to be for Campbell or the mare on Legends Day, as the bay made a break on the first turn and finished out of the money.
Regardless of the outcome, the USTA’s exclusive footage from Campbell’s race bike allows fans to be right there with him for the Legends Day Trot. While watching the video, you can manipulate the camera angles by using your mouse. Please note that the first nine minutes of the video is of Campbell and his mount post-parading. Campbell begins to head in behind the gate at roughly the 9:15 mark.
Although he wasn’t shown much support at the mutuel windows, driver Steve Condren and the Al Fair-trained Lady Caterina upset the apple cart during the 2017 Legends Day Trot. The duo went straight to the top at odds of 25-1 and recorded a gate-to-wire win in 1:58.1, which returned a $53.50 win mutuel.
