Extender N, a 12-year-old pacing gelding trained by Nat Varty and driven by Joe Pavia Jr., won his second straight $28,750 Open Handicap Pace at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs Friday night

.

Both of the wins came on racing surfaces listed as good. Assigned Post 6 in the eight horse field, Extender N left quickly and battled newcomer No. 8 Third Day (Jim Taggart Jr.) for the early lead with both on just about equal terms as the opening quarter clicked in :26.3. The two went head to head until the three-eighths pole when Pavia Jr. forged ahead with Extender N., getting to the half in :55.3.

The two horses were still one-two at the three-quarter pole timed in 1:23.2 before Extender N won the race by three lengths with No. 7 Four Starz Sue second and No. 2 Roll Call (Kevin Sizer) third.

This was the seventh win in 19 starts this season for Extender N, now a winner of more than $800,000 career wise.

“He (Extender N) is such a nice horse and very tough on the front end,” said Pavia Jr. in the winner’s circle.

Pavia Jr. won five straight races on Friday night’s card and had six victories overall through the first 10 races of the 16-race card.
