Whats Up Doc escaped a tight spot on the backside and flew through the stretch to nab Mcland at the line in the $2,000 Winners Over Handicap Pace on Wednesday, July 29 at Inverness Raceway.
Redmond Doucet grabbed a seat third with the gelding while Mcland (Walter Walker) fired out to early control, striding five lengths clear at the quarter in :28.2 and carrying a gap to the rest through a :57 half and 1:26.2 three-quarters. Hippyjohn (Zach Mullins) was stalled to the outside of Whats Up Doc going down the backstretch, but the latter shook loose as that rival retreated. Whats Up Doc took aim at Mcland, kicking home in :28.4 to chase down the pacesetter in the stretch and win by a neck in 1:56.1. Shir Gain (Rod Gillis) was third.
Whats Up Doc’s win came as his first of the season after nine finishes in the triactor in 10 previous starts. John MacLellan owns, trains and bred the seven-year-old son of Hilarious Halo-Cmr Maybe Loaded. The winner is now 23-for-117 with $37,646 in earnings. He paid $4.30 to win.
Coot Cobbler ($13.90) won the third-race Graham Family Pace. Walter Walker swung him out from the pocket on the final turn, and the Ron Garland-trained gelding rolled clear by 2-1/4 lengths in 2:00.1 in the $2,175 conditioned contest.
