Chewy Baca, one of the winningest horses in Running Aces’ history, did it again Tuesday night (July 28) when he capturing the $8,000 Open I Pace in 1:52.4 by a half-length over three-year-old Linkjack Hanover (driven by Rick Magee) and Quality Sport (Steve Wiseman).
Chewy Baca was making his first start for new owner Dr. James Findlay and new trainer-driver Travis Bowman after they plucked him for $15,000 via the claim box 10 days ago. Now six years of age, the Minnesota-sired son of Relentless Yankee has notched 31 career victories, the majority at Running Aces.
Minnesota-sired two-year-old trotters were also on display Tuesday night in a pair of $5,500 dashes, one for each sex. Three of the five fillies in the first split went offstride in the early stages, but one – RSS Express (Duane Roland) – was able to recover and score a 2:08.2 victory over The Last Railway (Steve Wiseman) and Hall Of Riches (Brandon Jenson). Duane and Connie Roland own the freshman daughter of Rail Splitter, who now sports two wins and two place finishes in four starts, good for $8,650 in earnings.
The ‘baby boys’ fared much better, with four of them within two lengths at the finish of a 2:01.4 mile. Undefeated The Winnin Dollar (Steve Wiseman) topped Margins Echo (Rick Magee), Big Red Rail (Duane Roland) and Mr Jackpot (Brett Ballinger) in the hotly-contested event. Owner Jesse De Long had been campaigning The Winnin Dollar at Iowa fairs before sending the son of SOS Lunar Eclipse to trainer-driver Steve Wiseman for his Running Aces debut.
