Rare Legacy put forth a strong career debut performance as she captured the fastest of three Ontario Sires Stakes Grassroots second-leg divisions for two-year-old trotting fillies at Kawartha Downs on Saturday, July 26.

Third behind loose leader Blue Rare (Austin Sorrie) through :29.1 and :59 first-half panels, Rare Legacy took over second position for Nick Boyd before three-quarters in 1:27.4 and began to chase down the pacesetter. She made up seven lengths in the final quarter with a :29 kick to catch Blue Rare and drew clear by 1-3/4 lengths for the victory in 1:58.1. Eye See You (Anthony Haughan) finished third.

Rare Legacy, a daughter of Muscle Mass-Lady Talbot, was an $18,000 London Classic Yearling Sale purchase for owners S&R Racing Stable Inc., Gestions JF Goyette Inc., Jean Francois Goyette, and SMS Ventures Inc. Rene Dion trains the filly, who paid $8.70 to win.

Tyler Jones drove the winners of the other two divisions, starting with debutante Makina Run For It ($25.70) in the first split. He sent the filly on a third-quarter brush, and she pushed clear to score by 1-1/4 lengths in 2:00. Alan Fair trains the homebred daughter of Muscle Mass-Sheguindah for Elizabeth Fair.

Karmaisaqueen ($6.90) won the final group, sliding out of the pocket at the top of the lane and slingshotting to the top to win by 2-1/4 lengths in 1:59.1. The Duncan Brewer-trained Green Manalishi S-Victoriahasasecret filly is now one-for-three lifetime. The $25,000 London sale buy is owned by Brewer, Randall Urquhart, and Steve Deady.

The next Grassroots leg for the two-year-old filly trotters is set for Wednesday, August 6 at Grand River Raceway.

Kawartha Downs celebrated its 53rd anniversary on the evening. The official opening of the track was held on July 22, 1972 with Earl Rowe cutting the ribbon. It hosted a 10-race card that day, with a fastest mile of 2:07. The quickest time on Saturday’s card was the late-charging 1:53.2 victory by Better Sunset (Murray Brethour) in the sixth race.
