P H Supercam wore down defending champion and track record holder Dancin Yankee in a photo finish to win the seventh annual $260,000 Joe Gerrity Memorial Pace on Saturday night at Saratoga Raceway.

P H Supercam was driven by Jason Bartlett for owner and trainer Jeff Bamond Jr. of Brick, New Jersey.

When the gate swung open, there was a scramble for the early lead during which 3-5 favourite Luck Be Withyou (Mark MacDonald) broke stride in the first turn. Michaels Power (Bruce Aldrich Jr.) protected rail position while 2-1 second choice Dancin Yankee (Jim Morrill Jr.) forged on just to his outside.

Dancin Yankee took over the lead and carved out opening fractions of :26.3 and :54.2 before being confronted down the backstretch by P H Supercam. Bartlett sent the 9-2 third choice first over from third and began to edge ahead of Dancin Yankee as they raced by three-quarters in 1:22.

Dancin Yankee fought back around the final turn with P H Supercam still challenging down the stretch and Michaels Power closing up the passing lane. Fighting right down to the wire, P H Supercam eventually pushed past Dancin Yankee to prevail by a neck in 1:50.1, the fastest mile so far of the Saratoga meet. Longshot Domethatagain (Billy Dobson) came on for third over Michaels Power.

P H Supercam earned his 47th career win and pushed his bankroll over $1.2 million. The eight-year-old pacer, who finished sixth in the Gerrity last year, has now won eight of his 17 seasonal starts while earning $368,860.

The Ontario-sired Million Dollar Cam gelding was bred by Dr. James Shive of Shubenacadie, N.S.

Saturday's undercard also included two $82,000-plus divisions of the New York Sire Stakes for three-year-old pacing colts and geldings, which were won by A Bettor Hat and driver Bruce Aldrich Jr. in 1:52.4 for trainer/co-owner Gilbert Garcia-Herrera, and Steve Elliott's Artistic Major in 1:51.2 with Jim Morrill Jr. in the sulky.
