The five-year-old Captaintreacherous stallion Warrawee Vital posted the fastest mile of the year in Canada when winning the $38,500 co-featured Open Handicap Pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday night (July 23).
Driver Trevor Henry hustled Warrawee Vital for the front on a speed mission. Never seeing another rival, the Rob Fellows trainee kept separation from his peers to click fractions of :26.4, :54.2 and 1:21.1 in progress to a 4-3/4-length win in 1:47.2 over East End and pocket-chaser Wheels On Fire. The time bests the mile paced by Jimmy Freight in the Mohawk Gold Cup, where he outgamed Linedrive Hanover and bested Allywag Hanover to win in 1:48.
Blair Corbeil, Yolanda Fellows and M&s Racing Stable Inc. own Warrawee Vital, a now 18-time winner in 41 starts and earner of $512,456. He paid $2.70 to win.
Shes Nun Bettor N also did the work on the lead and paid dividends in the $32,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Handicap Pace. The six-year-old Bettors Delight mare cleared command out of post eight to lead through splits of :26.3, :56 and 1:23.2. She dealt with a first-over push from 6-5 favourite So Much More circling the final turn and kept that rival at bay while withstanding a late charge from Voelz Delight to win by 1-3/4 lengths in 1:50.4.
Richard Moreau trains Shes Nun Bettor N for owner Brad Grant. She won her 18th race from 67 starts and has now earned $295,555. She paid $15.30 to win.
