The four-year-old Moon Beam gelding The Light Speed zoomed from well off the speed to overcome his handicapped post and score consecutive victories in the $10,500 Preferred Handicap Pace on Sunday night (July 24) at Rideau Carleton Raceway.
Trainer-driver Guy Gagnon took back with The Light Speed to race last while St Lads Cash cruised by the quarter in :27 until Major Hill hurried alongside and too the lead. Major Hill then led the field to a :56.1 half while The Light Speed sat parked but on cover from last as Springbridge Jim then made a move for the top. In the sprint to three-quarters, Springbridge Jim grabbed the lead while clicking the timer in 1:23.2 with Lovemyrockinbird stalled first over and The Light Speed positioned seven lengths off the lead. Once Gagnon spun The Light Speed wide for the drive, the gelding swept the field and rallied to a head victory over pocket-surging Major Hill in 1:52.2. St Lads Cash finished third and Lovemyrockinbird held fourth.
Winning his 24th race from 56 starts, The Light Speed has banked $166,344 for owner-breeder Michel Nolette. He paid $10.80 to win.
