The second leg of the Whenuwishuponastar Pacing Series for two-year-old fillies went postward on Monday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, and heavily favoured Love Canal and L Dees Lioness captured the $30,000 divisions.
Love Canal, who was sent off as the 1-9 choice in her tilt, was a last-to-first winner in 1:54 for driver Jody Jamieson and trainer Tony O’Sullivan.
The undefeated rookie tucked in fifth while Social Scene hustled to the top and supplied the field with an opening quarter clocked in :28. Breathtakingbeauty shot out of the three-hole in the backstretch and took command at the mid-way point in :56.4. She was still on the lead at the three-quarter pole in 1:26, but Love Canal was tipping off second-over cover and commencing her rally. She stormed home in :27.1 to win by a length over Breathtakingbeauty, with Social Scene escaping late to grab third prize.
“With a filly like Love Canal, she is just so pushbutton,” said driver Jody Jamieson. “She has been so impressive that I wasn’t really worried with how slow or fast they went.
"I didn’t figure I was going to be any more than five lengths out of it at the three-quarter pole,” he added. “She has made up those kinds of lengths every start of her life or both starts, I guess, now. But tonight, same thing, she just picked them all up and did what she had to do.”
The daughter of Badlands Hanover-A Votre Pante, who swept the first OSS Gold Series of the season at Mohawk Racetrack, is now 3-for-3 for the partnership of Let It Ride Stables Inc, Robert Cooper Stables LLC and J And T Silva Stables LLC.
L Dees Lioness, who was sent off as the 3-5 choice, was a coast-to-coast winner in her assignment for the team of driver Scott Zeron and trainer Casie Coleman.
Zeron hustled the filly to the lead from Post 4 and after slicing out splits of :27.3, :57.1 and 1:25.4 she uncorked a final quarter clocked in :27.3 to win by half of a length over the pocket-sitting I Luv The Nitelife, with the show dough going to Mattie Terror Girl.
“She is one of my favourite fillies that Casie (trainer Coleman) has right now so I expected her to come home like that,” said Zeron from the winner’s circle. “There are some great fillies coming in here. I don’t underestimate any of them, but I know what mine is capable of.”
The homebred daughter of Somebeachsomewhere-L Dees Val improved her record to 1-1-1 in three tries for partners Lawrence Dumain of Pine Bush and Carlo Lattinelli of Staten Island, NY. The $15,000 payday boosted her earnings to $21,900.
