Two-year-old pacing colts and geldings were out in full force Thursday evening at Truro Raceway as the half-mile over hosted six divisions of the Atlantic Sires Stakes.
Colin N Down parked past the quarter pole in his $6,100 ‘A’ division before finding the front for driver Gilles Barrieau. Once they cleared it was game over for the others. The gelding threw down middle panels of 1:01 and 1:30.3 before using a :29.2 kicker to win by 2-1/4 lengths over J J Antonio. Third prize went to Ashes To Ashes.
Steve Mason trains the homebred son of Articulator-Khadiva Hanover for Downey Stables of Quispamsis, NB. The win improved the rookie’s record to 2-1-0 from three tries.
Mighty Cowboy rushed to the lead in his $6,100 assignment and never looked back for trainer/driver Darren Crowe. The colt posted panels of :30.2, 1:01.4 and 1:31.1 before scooting home in :29 to win by a length over Complete Player in 2:00.1. Libertys Choice was third.
Sent off as the 1-2 favourite, the son of Brandons Cowboy-Mission Beach posted his first lifetime win for owner David MacDonald of Halifax, NS.
Jigtime Jones used off-the-pace tactics to capture the third ‘A’ division for the mother/son duo of trainer Clare MacDonald and driver Rinaldo ‘Neldie’ MacDonald. The gelding got away fourth and held that position through opening-half fractions of :29.1 and :59.4. The pacer scooped up cover in the backstretch and tracked that cover past the three-quarter pole in 1:30. Windemerefallnforu set all the speed before weakening, and that allowed Jigtime Jones to blast off cover and use a :29.2 kicker to win by a length over race favourite Nameisonthehalter. Lucbobski circled from last to finish third.
It was the first win in two tries for the son of Western Paradise-Gold Luck, who is owned by his reinsman and partner Ian Tate of St. Andrews, NS.
Tobinator captured the final ‘A’ division, and he did so in wire-to-wire fashion for the tandem of driver Corey MacPherson and trainer Trevor Hicken. The colt rocketed to the lead from Post 6 and never looked back through fractions of :28.2, :59.4 and 1:29.3. A :28.2 closing quarter earned Tobinator the win by three-quarters of a length over Carters Caper in 1:58. Southsidelightning rounded out the Triactor ticket.
The son of Coastocoast Yankee-Southern Blue now boasts a 2-1-0 record from three tries for partners Robin Burke, Luke Burke, Perry Burke and Kent Livingston.
A set of $2,500 ‘B’ divisions also went postward for the rookies, with IC A Free Spirit (2:00.4) and Matts Tuition (2:04.1) winning their respective divisions.
