Willyorwonthe Wins Georgian Preferred

Trainer-driver William Megens swooped first over with his homebred Angus Hall gelding Willyorwonthe rounding the final turn to win the $11,500 Preferred 2 Trot on Tuesday, July 2 at Georgian Downs.

The six-year-old sat third as Fly Beyond led through splits of :27.2 and :56. Megens pulled Willyorwonthe off the pegs moving towards three-quarters, timed in 1:24.4, and drew alongside the tempo-setter in the stretch before sliding to a length-and-a-quarter victory in 1:54. Fly Beyond held second from Aboslut Seelster while 8-5 favourite Flying Isa N sat fifth throughout.

Winning his ninth race from 21 starts this season and his 31st from 132 overall, Willyorwonthe has earned $293,600. He paid $7.30 to win.

A few races later Bastiano upset the $8,500 Preferred 3 Trot with a wire-to-wire score in 1:56.3. The five-year-old Angus Hall gelding led through fractions of :28.2, :59 and 1:27.2 while odds-on favourite Bank Guard pressed from first over on the second circuit. Bastiano continued to lead through the stretch whileEuro Classic closed to finish second by three-quarter lengths. Bank Guard stalled outside and settled for third.

Returning $28.20 to win, Bastiano races for owner and trainer Bernie Bahr. He won his second race from seven starts this season and his 17th from 57 overall, earning $98,108. David Boughton sat in the bike.
