Eaves On Cup, Whelan, Queen's Plate

"What I've found interesting is that each commentary, whether it's print or radio or television, almost every time when they mention that she'll be attending the Queen's Plate they characterize it as the highlight of her trip because of her love of the horse and

her love of horse racing."

On today's Trot Radio, Woodbine Entertainment Group President and CEO Nick Eaves talk to Norm Borg for reaction on this past Saturday's North America Cup at Mohawk, whether WEG would consider trying more off-beat promotions, the recent court judgment won by Jim Whelan against WEG and the Ontario Racing Commission as well at this Sunday's edition of the Queen's Plate at Woodbine - where the thoroughbreds might just take a backseat to a special guest as Her Majesty The Queen of Canada and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will be attending.

Eaves on the North America Cup: "We're thrilled with the way the Pepsi North America Cup went. We bet more than we did the year before, both system-wide we were up and, very importantly, our wagering was up on-track by just shy of ten per cent so we were delighted about that."

Eaves on trying different promotions: "I absolutely agree that where there are examples of other leagues or sports or industries implementing unique ideas that clearly attract a new customer, that's exactly what we as an industry need to be doing."

Eaves on Jim Whelan ruling: "Well, we obviously disagree. We're reviewing the decision, in particular there was a very strong dissenting view amongst the three justice panel which didn't support the two that obviously wrote the majority ruling. We're looking at those different elements and we'll certainly have more to say once we've done that."

Eaves on Queen's Plate: "It's been amazing to me and it's just fantastic for horse racing in general how on the radar everything about this year's Queen Plate has been, and I think the Royal visit generally is getting more attention than it typically would."
