Twenty-one freshman trotting fillies trucked to Mohawk Racetrack for OSS Gold Series action Tuesday evening, and it turned out to be another big night for daughters of Kadabra.
On A Sunny Day took home the hardware for the second time in as many tries for driver Sylvain Filion and trainer/breeder Luc Blais by capturing the first division. The daughter of Muscle Mass-Dicent No shot to the lead from Post 7 and laid down fractions of :28, :57.4 and 1:28.1 before using a :29.1 closing quarter to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Literally. Tropicana AS was third.
Determination of Montreal, QC owns the talented youngster, who was a 1:59 winner in her debut versus OSS Gold Series foes on July 5. The filly has banked $70,000 to date.
Winter Sweet Frost won the second division to remain undefeated for trainer Paul Reid. Doug McNair sat a pocket trip to the quarter pole with the homebred before taking command in the backstretch. Once on the lead the daughter of Kadabra-American Frost laid down middle splits of :59.1 and 1:29 before storming home in :29.2 to win by 2-1/2 lengths over Gravitator. Taking home third prize was Expose Yourself to complete the Kadabra-sired Triactor.
A 1:59.3 winner in an OSS Gold Series division to kick start her career on July 5, Winter Sweet Frost bumped her bankroll to $70,000 with the win for owner/breeder Robert Key of Leechburg, PA. She’s a half-sister to Frost Bites K (1:54 - $440,804).
Magic Presto fired home in :27.3 to post a 5-1 upset in the final division for trainer Richard ‘Nifty’ Norman, a man who knows a thing or two about talented trotters. The daughter of Kadabra-In The Mean Time got away fourth for driver Trevor Henry, who treated her to a ground-saving journey through panels of :28.3, :59.4 and 1:29.2 Race favourite Sweet Of My Heart laid down those fractions, but couldn’t fend off Magic Presto in the closing strides. Magic Presto won by a length over Sweet Of My Heart in 1:57.2. Lady Justice completed the top three finishers.
Mel Hartman, Herb Liverman, David Mc Duffee and Little E LLC share ownership on the full-sister to Could It Be Magic (1:56.4 - $213,156). The freshman was purchased for $160,000 from last year’s Harrisburg Yearling Sale.
