P H Mike sprinted home to win the featured $2,000 Winners Over Pace on Saturday night at Northside Downs in a speedy 1:56.4
.
The seven-year-old Fit For Life gelding got away fourth from Post 5 as the favoured Ride The Lightning (Redmond Doucet) led the field through early fractions of :28.3 and :56.2. Cruisinart (Greg Bailey) applied pressure en route to the half and eventually settled on top during the third interval.
By the 1:26.3 third quarter station, P H Mike was out and rolling under the guidance of trainer/driver Myles Heffernan. The 4-1 fourth choice used a :29.4 final frame to come on for the victory, missing the track record by one-fifth of a second.
Cruisinart finished three-quarters of a length back in second and Lexus Bandito (Joseph Campbell) came on for third.
Heffernan also owns the winner of 32 races and $56,607 in purses. Since joining Heffernan’s barn in May, P H Mike has won six times in nine starts and has yet to finish off the board.
