A slow first half followed by a rapid back half translated into back-to-back trips to victory lane for Sabine Pass at Grand River Raceway.

Trainer/driver Paul Davies won a conditioned event over the Elora, Ont. oval last week, and they came right back thanks to a 1:55.3 victory in Monday’s $7,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers.

Sabine Pass shot to the lead from Post 1 and sliced out fractions of :28.4, :59.1 and 1:27.4 before roaring home in :27.4. The pacer was a half-length better than Buckeroo. Third prize went to Reel.

The five-year-old son of Rocknroll Hanover-Penny For Nickel is owned by Audrey Leighland of Maple Ridge, BC. The gelding, who is 4-for-22 this year, is a 12-time winner in his career. To date he’s banked more than $115,000.
