NA Cup Starter Qualifies At Mohawk

Five of this morning's 10 qualifying races at Mohawk Racetrack were devoted to two-year-olds, but that didn't stop one of Canada's top three-year-old pacing colts

from returning to the track for the first time since the Pepsi North America Cup.

In rein to Paul MacDonell in Race 9, Burlington Stakes winner Carnivore left from Post 6 and put in a wire-to-wire mile. The son of Real Desire recorded a two-length margin of victory in what was a 1:54.1 mile.

Carnivore's win this morning came against a group of older horses. The career earner of $355,189 had not put in a charted mile since making a break early on in the NA Cup.

The juvenile winners this morning included the Michael Keeling-trained Broadway Hall colt Beer League, which threw up a 20-length win in 2:01 for pilot Paul MacDonell. Tony O'Sullivan-trained Western Hanover filly Queen Me converted a pocket trip and won in 1:59.3. One race later, Striking Sahbra filly Renees Pockets notched a head victory in 2:01.4 for trainer Chantal Mitchell and driver Rick Zeron. Trainer Casie Coleman and driver Mark MacDonald also clicked with a freshman, as Matts Scooter colt Digam recorded a neck victory in 2:01. The last of the juvenile qualifiers went to Fire Meets Ice, a chestnut Striking Sahbra colt which won by two and a quarter lengths in 2:03.3.
