Weekend Bernie established a shiny new 1:53.4 track record last Saturday afternoon at Evergreen Park in Grande Prairie, Alta., but driver Mike Henne

ssy says the richest son of As Promised had a lot more left in the tank.

“We probably could have gone quicker,” Hennessy told the Daily Herald-Tribune. “I wasn’t letting it all hang out on the final turn. He can get a little steppy there.”

“That was probably one of the best miles he’s ever gone in his life and he’s gone some big ones,” said Rod Hennessy of Millet, Alta., who shares ownership with Lorne Duffield of Edmonton. “He and Justa Ripple A have been the best horses I’ve ever owned. I lost Justa Ripple A in a fire years ago and he won around 50 races for me. Bernie has given me plenty of great memories too.”

Weekend Bernie lowered the former record of 1:54.3 set in 2008 by Canaco Nolton at odds of 7-1 in the $11,000 Open Pace. The seven-year-old gelding has won 30 times in his career earning a grand total of $546,357.
