After breaks proved costly in his two pari-mutuel starts to date, Hes Stalking You went back to the drawing board and, despite an early bobble, posted the fastest mile by a two-year-old in Friday's (July 16) qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park.
The son of Hes Watching and Sydney Seelster faltered amid his early push to the lead, but Jody Jamieson was able to steady Hes Stalking You back to his proper gait before rating a :59.3 half. Through the far turn, he amassed steady clearance over pocket rival Courageux and used :28.3 late speed to evade the closing tandem of Macho Phil and Century Iglesias by 6-1/2 lengths in 1:56.4. Breeder Sydney Weaver owns the Dave Menary trainee Hes Stalking You with Menary Guerriero, Bruce Norris and J. Paul Henderson.
Katherine Steacy and the Hudson Standardbred Stable's In The Mood was fastest among rookie trotting fillies, orchestrating a late move out of traffic to narrowly defeat the three-wide Einhorn Is Finkle in 1:59.2. James MacDonald drove the daughter of Sunshine Beach and Racey Miss to victory in her qualifying debut for trainer Shawn Steacy.
The morning's trotting standard was established by Rose Run Xcentric, a daughter of Kadabra and Drink The Wine, who stalked the live cover of Pocahontas out of the far turn before eclipsing that rival — who faltered nearing the finish — for a 2:00.1 score. Bob McClure drove the Robert Don Fellows trainee, who capped her mile with a :27.3 final sectional, for Brookbro Racing and Chris Bell.
