Meridian Magic Keeps The Magic Alive

Atlantic Sires Stakes action for three-year-old pacing fillies was hosted by Red Shores at Summerside Raceway with the streaking Meridian Magic among the Friday night winners

Shesa Mint converted from the pocket to win the first of three $9,840 ‘A’ divisions for trainer-driver Michael McGuigan and Charlottetown’s Polar Ice Stable.

Shesa Mint, the 5-2 second choice in the field, followed favourite C H Yocoohno (Kenny Aresenault) through stations of :28.4, :59.3 and 1:28.4 before coming on to score 2:00 by nearly three lengths. Putnams Dough Girl (Bernard McCallum) and J Gs Frankie (Todd Trites) were second and third.

The victory was the Signyourlifeaway-Costa Mint filly’s second in seven starts this year pushing her earnings to $10,983.

Meridian Magic made it 17 wins in a row with another dominating score in the next division.

Trainer-driver Kenny Arsenault directed the popular daughter of Largo-Hot Asset past quarter marks of :29.3, 1:00.4 and 1:30.2 en route to a three-length victory in 1:59.3. Elm Grove Ella (Clare MacDonald) followed from the pocket to finish second and Seawind Allegra (Danny Romo) rounded out the top three.

Now six-for-six on the year, Meridian Magic has banked $30,667 for breeder Barry Martin, who shares ownership with James Gillis of Sydney, NS. Lifetime, she has put together a record reading 17-1-2 in 20 starts with earnings totaling $107,029.

Sent postward as the longest shot on the board at odds of 13-1, Oceanview Connie survived an overland trip to win the final split in 2:01.3.

With trainer Mike Stevenson in the bike, the daughter of Full Scholarship-Wendells Sister left from Post 7 and worked her way to the lead as favourite Charlottes Coast (Danny Romo) carved out panels of :29.3, 1:00.1 and 1:29.4. Oceanview Connie surged ahead in the stretch to win for the second time in eight starts this year. We B Success (Clare MacDonald) finished one length behind after rallying from the backfield and Island Sensation (Leonard Meyers) was third.

Oceanview Connie, owned by Daniel Ross of Belfast, PE, watched her seasonal earnings jump to $8,083 with the win.

Teela Tequila (2:04.3), Golden Hands (2:04) and Howmacs Quicktempo (2:05) picked up wins in their respective ‘B’ divisions worth $2,500 a piece.
