The winners of the $8,100 Preferred events at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, July 14 let others do the hefty work cutting the mile while they drafted and popped past in the stretch to win.
Lagerfeld tracked favourite Pasadena Star before vacating the pocket to win the Preferred Trot in 1:55.4. Trainer-driver Raymond Gingras positioned the six-year-old Yankee Glide gelding behind a tempo of :27.3, :57.3 and 1:26.1 before making his move after the leader. The pair then held off a late pursuit from Talbotcreek Suzie to win by a half length while Pasadena Star settled for third.
Owned by Gingras with partners John and Jim Fielding and Herb Liverman, Lagerfeld won his fourth race from nine starts this season and his 14th from 61 overall, earning $748,664. He paid $17.20 to win.
Favourite Saulsbrook Peach stalked Western Phil as he set quick fractions before faltering and letting the 10-year-old Royal Mattjesty gelding vault past to a 1:53.2 win. Behind a :26.1, :55.2 and 1:24.1 clip, Saulsbrook Peach launched through a seam at the inside as Western Phil retreated through the stretch. Prince Giovanni had taken the lead from first over at the head of the stretch but could not repel the pocket-sitter’s rush and settled for second, a half length behind. Stonebridge Beach, from second over, took third.
Trained and driven by Guy Gagnon, Saulsbrook Peach races for owner Catheline Pelletier. The $5.90 winner collected his sixth victory from 17 starts this season and his 33rd from 200 overall, earning $207,697.
