Two-year-old pacing fillies were featured in Atlantic Sires Stakes on the Wednesday night (July 13) program during Governor’s Plate Week at Red Shores Summerside. Marc Campbell and Kenny Arsenault dominated the stakes action, each driving three winners.
Campbell scored his victories with his own trainees Filly Forty Seven, Elektra Express and Woodmere Sandylu.
Campbell hustled first-time starter Filly Forty Seven to the lead by the :29.4 first quarter in the opening $9,200 "A" division and carved out middle splits of 1:00.1 and 1:30.3 before holding off Putthecherryontop (Mark Haig), who rallied home off a three-hole trip. The Proven Lover-This Marks A Lady filly prevailed by a quarter-length in 2:01.1 for owners Darryl MacLean, Katelyn Smallwood, Cory Carver and Tanya Tremblett. Favourite Woodmere Dreams (Gilles Barrieau) closed well for third after being interfered with off the gate and hooking wheels with Imahawkchick (Danny Romo).
Campbell and Elektra Express left from the outside post six in another "A" division and bypassed the two-hole through a 30-second opening quarter to take the lead from Keep It Country (Dale Spence). They cruised past the half in 1:01 and three-quarters in 1:31 before drawing off by nine lengths in a :28.4 closing quarter. Owned and bred by Danica Ellis, the filly by Western Paradise out of Expressly Hanover won her career debut in 1:59.4. Darn Quick (Danny Romo) edged out Keep It Country for the runner-up honours.
Also making her career debut in a $2,500 "B" division, Woodmere Sandylu was victorious in 2:04.1 for owner Charles Symes.
In the other "A" division, Arsenault moved the Dooley Boys Racing Stable's Kinda Like Her out from third approaching the 1:31.2 third quarter mark and confronted the front-striding Shesaroyal Cowgirl (Mark Bradley). The favoured Ameripan Gigolo-Allamerican Napa filly gained the advantage around the final turn en route to the maiden-breaking victory in 2:00.2. Shesaroyal Cowgirl finished one and three-quarter lengths behind in second and Tobins Secret (Earl Smith) was third.
Arsenault also drove "B" division winners Woodmere Finesse (2:04.4) for trainer John Arsenault and owner Edward Maher, and his own trainee Im Not Lisa (2:04.1) for the Tenpac Stable. Both fillies were successful in their first career outings.
Campbell and Arsenault share the top spot with six wins in the Basil Whelan Memorial top driver contest for Governor’s Plate Week going into Thursday’s card. Post time is 7 p.m. Dale Spence is next with five victories.
Also on Wednesday night, Nogreatmischief won the $1,800 West Prince Horsemen’s Club Pace in 1:57.2. Walter Cheverie was in the bike for the victory for his co-owner John Thompson. Artners In Crime (Ron Matheson) was second with Superbo Hanover (Gordie Hennessey) third.
