Trainer Yves Filion has been associated with some very talented horses over the course of his career, and on Monday at Mohawk Racetrack Rebeka Bayama proved she has all the parts to be his next great one
.
The three-year-old daughter of Leader Bayama-Joyce Bayama matched Shacked Up’s track record for three-year-old filly pacers when she toured the oval in 1:49.4 en route to winning the $60,000 final of the Town Pro Pacing Series.
After winning posting a 1:53.1 win in the opening leg and a 1:52.3 score in the second leg, Rebeka Bayama completed the sweep in front-stepping fashion. Sylvain Filion rolled her to the quarter-pole in a :26-second clip before releasing Keene Supreme (Rick Zeron) to the engine. It was a brief lead for that filly, however, as Filion came right back around to reclaim command. She threw down middle splits of :53.4 and 1:22 before finishing off the competition with a :27.4 final frame. Northwest Hanover rallied sharply to nip Seriously for the runner-up award.
“She was really aggressive tonight because she was hitting the race bike,” said driver Sylvain Filion. “I was a little concerned when I saw the half-mile timer in :53.4. I knew we were going fast so I wasn’t surprised by her 1:49.4 performance.”
“The plan is still to turn her out,” said trainer Yves Filion. “I will bring her back in October to prepare her for later stakes in the year. She isn’t eligible to anything because she is Quebec bred. I will turn her out because I know next year she has the potential to be a top level mare here on the WEG circuit.”
Rebeka Bayama, a homebred owned by Bayama Farms Inc of Saint-Andre-D’Argenteuil, Quebec, went 1-for-2 in her rookie campaign and has followed up with a 5-1-1 record in eight starts this season. The $30,000 payday lifted her overall bankroll to $69,648.
