Daisy Corvette prevailed off a perfect pocket trip, zooming by the pacesetter in the stretch to win the $12,500 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace on Friday, July 12 at Century Downs.
Driven by Mike Hennessy, Daisy Corvette stalked the quick-leaving Outlaw Sharktastic (Nathan Sobey) from the pocket through fractions of :27.4, :56.3 and 1:24.4 before launching her attack at the head of the stretch. She prevailed in 1:54 flat with Outlaw Sharktastic settling for second one length behind. If Only Id Known (Phil Giesbrecht), the 9-5 favourite and winner of the Mares Preferred in her last start two weeks ago, advanced first-over down the backstretch to take third.
Climbing back up to the top mares class following a winning effort against conditioned company a week ago, Daisy Corvette was sent postward as the 9-2 fourth choice in the field of six and paid $11.70 to win.
Trained by Shanisty Andres for owner Tammy Murschell, the five-year-old Mystician-Yellow Mustang mare earned her third win from a dozen seasonal starts. She now has 16 victories lifetime with earnings just shy of $150,000.
After winning the Friday feature, Hennessy found himself right back in the winner's circle with the streaking Outlaw Spiced Rum ($3.30) after the Travis Ellis trainee wired a field of $20,000 claiming mares in 1:55.2 to make it six straight. The six-year-old daughter of Blue Burner out of Billie J Blue Chip became the winningest pacing mare in Canada so far this year with 13 victories (from 20 starts) for owners Trevor Williams and Aurel Vodon.
Brandon Campbell led all trainers and drivers for wins with a triple on Friday's 11-race card, scoring an upset with Metaki ($26.60) and later winning back-to-back races with Agricola ($5.40) and Outlaw Endofanera ($5.40).
